How To Use

Before buying essential oils, there are several things to consider to ensure that you are purchasing high-quality oils that are safe and effective. Here are some important factors to look for:

  1. Purity: Look for oils that are 100% pure and natural, without any synthetic additives or fillers. Make sure that the oil is labeled as "pure" or "100% pure," and avoid oils that are labeled as "fragrance oil" or "perfume oil."

  2. Quality: Choose oils that are high-quality and therapeutic grade. Look for oils that are distilled using the correct methods for each plant and that have been tested for purity and potency.

  3. Botanical name: Make sure that the botanical name of the plant species is listed on the label. This is important because different species of plants can have different properties and uses.

  4. Country of origin: The country where the plant is grown and the oil is produced can have an impact on the quality and potency of the oil.

  5. Price: High-quality essential oils can be expensive, so be wary of oils that are priced significantly lower than other brands. This may be a sign of lower quality or adulteration..

  6. Packaging: Choose oils that are packaged in dark glass bottles, which help to protect the oil from light and heat. Avoid oils that are packaged in plastic bottles, as they can leach chemicals into the oil.

By considering these factors, you can ensure that you are purchasing high-quality essential oils that are safe and effective for your need

The two main types of extraction of essential oils are:

  1. Steam Distillation: This is the most common method of extracting essential oils, and it involves passing steam through the plant material to vaporize the essential oils. The steam and essential oils are then condensed and collected separately, with the essential oils floating on top of the water.

  2. Solvent Extraction: This method involves using a solvent, such as ethanol or hexane, to extract the essential oils from the plant material. The plant material is first soaked in the solvent, which dissolves the essential oils. The solvent and essential oils are then separated, with the solvent being evaporated off to leave the pure essential oil.

There are also other methods of extraction such as cold pressing, enfleurage, and CO2 extraction, which are used for specific types of plants and essential oils.

The proper storage of essential oils is important to preserve their potency, aroma, and therapeutic benefits. Here are some tips on how to store your essential oils:

  1. Keep them in dark glass bottles: Essential oils should be stored in dark glass bottles such as amber or cobalt blue. This helps to protect the oils from light which can degrade the oils and reduce their effectiveness.

  2. Store in a cool and dry place: Essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark and dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Heat and light can cause the oils to deteriorate, while moisture can cause them to oxidize and lose their therapeutic benefits.

  3. Keep out of reach of children and pets: Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be toxic if ingested. It's important to store them in a safe place out of reach of children and pets.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your essential oils remain potent and effective for longer periods of time.

A carrier oil is a type of vegetable oil that is used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can cause skin irritation or other adverse reactions if they are applied directly to the skin. Carrier oils are used to dilute the essential oils, reducing the risk of skin irritation and making the essential oils safe to use on the skin.

Carrier oils are typically derived from nuts, seeds, or other plant parts, and they are often rich in vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds that can nourish and moisturize the skin. Some commonly used carrier oils include coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, avocado oil, and grapeseed oil.

When diluting essential oils with carrier oils, the recommended dilution ratio can vary depending on the type of essential oil and the intended use. As a general guideline, a 2% dilution is often used for adults (i.e., 12 drops of essential oil per 1 fluid ounce of carrier oil), while a lower dilution may be used for children, pregnant or nursing women, or people with sensitive skin. It's always best to consult a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare provider for specific guidance on diluting essential oils with carrier oils.

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that are obtained through various methods such as steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. They are called "essential" oils because they contain the essence of the plant's fragrance and flavor, as well as its therapeutic properties.

Essential oils are composed of volatile organic compounds that are naturally occurring in plants, and they are used in a wide range of applications such as aromatherapy, skincare, perfumes, and natural remedies. Each essential oil has its own unique chemical composition and therapeutic properties, and they can be used alone or in combination with other oils to create blends for specific purposes.

Some popular essential oils include lavender, peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, and rosemary, but there are many others to choose from depending on the desired effect. Essential oils can be diffused, inhaled, or applied topically (usually diluted with a carrier oil) depending on the intended use.

It's important to note that essential oils are highly concentrated and potent, and should be used with caution. They should be stored properly, and used in recommended dilutions to avoid skin irritation or other adverse reactions.

Many believe that organic essential oils have a higher level of purity than conventional oils. One big misconception many believe is that an 'organic' seal represents that the essential oil product is completely free from pesticides.

It is true that an organically-produced essential oil (which has been certified by an appropriate authority such as the QAI) is likely to be superior in some important aspects, such as its color, aroma, safety, sustainability, and its therapeutic value. In particular, they have been verified to comply with agricultural and manufacturing practices that actively seek to avoid GMOs and reduce the amount of synthetic pesticides, chemical contaminants, and other toxic compounds. As a result, organic essential oils may be more 'pure' with respect to these substances.

However, this does not mean that non-organic oils are somehow lacking in purity. There are many reputed suppliers that are dedicated to the purity of both their organic and non-organic oils, source ethically from premium-quality farms, and strive to guarantee the integrity of their essential oils.

No, it is generally not recommended to apply essential oils directly to the skin, as they are highly concentrated and can cause skin irritation or other adverse reactions if used undiluted. Essential oils are usually diluted with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or jojoba oil, before being applied to the skin.

The recommended dilution ratio can vary depending on the type of essential oil and the intended use, but as a general guideline, a 2% dilution is often used for adults (i.e., 12 drops of essential oil per 1 fluid ounce of carrier oil), while a lower dilution may be used for children, pregnant or nursing women, or people with sensitive skin.

It's important to note that some essential oils can be photosensitive, meaning they can increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight and cause skin irritation or discoloration if applied before going out in the sun. It's always best to consult a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare provider for specific guidance on diluting essential oils and using them safely on the skin.

Some essential oils can be safe and beneficial for pregnant women and children when used in the appropriate dilution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. However, there are also some oils that should be avoided altogether.

For example, essential oils such as frankincense, lavender, and lemon are generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and on children when used in appropriate dilutions.

When using essential oils on children, it's essential to dilute them properly. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be irritating to a child's sensitive skin. As a general rule, essential oils should be diluted to a 0.25% concentration or less for children under the age of 6, and 1% concentration for children 6 years and older.

In general, it is recommended that pregnant women and parents of young children consult with a healthcare professional or a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils.

In summary, while some essential oils can be safe for pregnant women and children, caution should be exercised, and it's best to consult a healthcare professional or a qualified aromatherapist before using them.

Essential oils can be harmful to pets, especially if used improperly. While some essential oils may be safe to use around pets, many can be toxic and cause a range of adverse reactions.

Pets have a more sensitive sense of smell than humans, and diffusing essential oils can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and even toxicity. Essential oils can also be harmful if ingested by pets, and some oils can cause liver and kidney damage.

To ensure the safety of your pets, it's recommended that you avoid diffusing essential oils around them, especially if you have cats, as they are particularly sensitive to many essential oils. If you do choose to use essential oils around your pets, make sure to research the specific oils you plan to use and consult with your veterinarian to ensure that they are safe for your pets.

Additionally, always keep essential oils out of reach of your pets, and never apply them directly to your pet's skin or fur without consulting with your veterinarian first.

Not all carrier oils are pet-friendly. Some carrier oils can be harmful to pets if ingested or applied topically, while others are safe for use. It's important to research the specific carrier oil you plan to use and consult with your veterinarian before using it on or around your pet.

Examples of carrier oils that are generally considered safe for pets when used appropriately include coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and jojoba oil. However, other oils like tea tree oil, clove oil, and wintergreen oil, should be avoided as they can be toxic to pets.

Remember, just because an oil is considered safe for human use doesn't mean it's safe for pets. Always err on the side of caution and seek the advice of a veterinarian before using any essential oils or carrier oils around your pets.
